• Uterine Fibroid Program

Uterine fibroids are a common condition. Nearly half of all women get them in their reproductive years and up to two-thirds will have fibroids by menopause.

While fibroids aren’t a problem for many women, some fibroids cause serious quality-of-life issues. If you have abnormal bleeding, severe pain or other symptoms caused by fibroids, we can help.

  • About the program

The Uterine Fibroid Program team at UK HealthCare includes talented gynecologists and interventionalists who offer the most advanced treatments for uterine fibroids, including minimally invasive surgery and nonsurgical options such as uterine fibroid embolization.

  • Treatment

Not all fibroids need to be treated. However, if treatment is necessary, the most common procedures are:

    • Laparoscopic hysterectomy, or the complete removal of the uterus.
    • Medical and surgical alternatives to hysterectomy.
    • Laparoscopic myomectomy, or the surgical removal of fibroids from the uterus. This option is appropriate for women who plan to become pregnant in the future.
    • Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) - a nonsurgical, minimally invasive outpatient procedure that cuts off the blood supply to the fibroids and shrinks them. There is little or no scarring, less pain and a much quicker recovery than with traditional surgery. You can usually go back to normal activities in a few days.
