Cancer Prevention and Control Program (CPCP)
The CPCP explores all issues related to cancer - and factors impacting cancer - from a macroscopic perspective across the entire spectrum of disease: From cancer cause and prevention, to diagnosis, to progression, to treatment, to palliation and supportive care.
The CPCP has four major components:
The Kentucky Cancer Program (KCP) is a core regional resource for cancer education, community partnership development, cancer resource dissemination, community-based research interventions and special community service initiatives - connecting cancer patients and survivors to oncology professionals, para-professionals and support services. KCP staff work with all community resource providers toward the overall goal of reducing the morbidity and mortality from cancer in their respective regions. www.kcp.uky.edu/KCPEastHome.html
-
The Kentucky Cancer Registry (KCR) is a computerized, statewide, population-based registry for the capture, analysis and reporting of data on all cancer cases in the Commonwealth of Kentucky -exceeding 21,000 new cases annually in 2006. KCR became an integral part of the national SEER system in 2000 and provides active leadership in the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR). This interactive system provides a powerful analytic research engine for community-driven and population-based research, while assisting the state in public policy development and public health resource allocation. www.kcr.uky.edu/history.html

The Cancer Information Service (CIS) provides the latest and most accurate information about cancer to patients, their families, health professionals, and the public. The CIS functions under contract with the National Cancer Institute to operate the Mid-South Cancer Information Service, covering Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Through its network of regional offices and partnerships with nonprofit, private, and other government agencies, the CIS reaches people who may have limited access to health information. By pooling resources toward common goals, the CIS and its partners leverage resources and design programs with a reach that extends deep into otherwise underserved areas. cancer.uky.edu/cis/

Surveillance and Research. This component of the CPCP broadly links all of the comprising elements to an overarching theme of cancer surveillance, hypothesis generation, intervention design, intervention implementation, intervention assessment, new hypothesis generation, etc.
Extramural funding for the combined programs and projects of the Markey Cancer Center's Cancer Prevention and Control Program exceeds $7.5 million in FY2007. The CPCP encourages partnerships and collaborations with scientists and community-based professionals at all levels to jointly carry out a shared mission of reducing the morbidity and mortality of cancer.
