Stroke Care Appointments and Info: 859-323-5661
Stroke is the third leading cause of death in Kentucky. Also called "brain attack," stroke is a medical emergency as serious as a heart attack. Our Stroke Specialists are available 24 hours a day to make sure every stroke is treated immediately. Our multidisciplinary Stroke Team stays on the leading edge of stroke treatment, using the latest technology and clot-busting drugs to treat strokes before they can damage the brain.
Leading-edge stroke careStroke patients at the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute have access not only to the region’s top doctors, but also to the most advanced medical technology. KNI is the only health care center in the region that operates the Merci® Retrieval System, a leading-edge tool for removing potentially lethal blood clots in the brain. Merci is guided by doctors, but it is smaller and more flexible than a human hand. The system is inserted like a catheter, then a doctor uses X-ray imaging to guide it to the clot. The Merci retriever grabs hold of the clot and inflates a tiny balloon to prevent a sudden rush of blood from interfering with the clot’s removal. After the Merci system has drawn the clot out of the body, the balloon deflates and normal blood flow resumes. Stroke warning signs:
