Primary care for children with special health needs

The Thomas H. Pinkstaff Medical Home Clinic (previously known as the Medical Home for Coordinated Pediatrics) provides primary medical care for:

    • Children in foster care

    • Children with special health care needs

The clinic is a joint venture of the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, the Commission for Children with Special Health Care Needs, and the UK College of Medicine Department of Pediatrics. In 2009 it was renamed in honor of Thomas H. Pinkstaff, MD, the clinic's first medical director.

  • Our mission

Our mission is to work with children and families to ensure that the child receives high-quality, comprehensive, coordinated, compassionate health care. Our physicians and staff work together with families to identify and access all the medical and nonmedical services needed to help the child and family achieve maximum potential.

    About the clinic

The clinic staff addresses each child's needs, makes appropriate referrals and coordinates follow-up care. The clinic, coupled with the nine commission nurses stationed in the Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) offices across the state, provides a level of medical expertise that has been desperately needed.

Medical information for children who visit the center is entered into the Commission for Children with Special Health Care Needs (CCSHCN) database, which can be accessed by its staff statewide, and follows the children no matter where they go, improving the consistency of care the children receive. This continuity gives the children a medical home.
