The new, approximately 300,000 square-foot facility opened September 10, 2013, at 1350 Bull Lea Road near Newtown Pike in Lexington, Ky. The phone number is 859-246-8000.
The new Eastern State Hospital opened in September 2013, providing recovery-focused, individualized care in a supportive environment that features the latest in mental health treatment. The original Eastern State Hospital opened in 1824 and cared for individuals for 189 years, making it the second-oldest psychiatric hospital in the country until the opening of the new Eastern State Hospital. Building on that legacy, the new 300,000-square-foot, 239-bed facility provides an extensive range of inpatient mental health services to adults living within the 50 counties surrounding and including Fayette County. Prior to the opening of the facility on UK's Coldstream Research Campus, UK HealthCare and the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) embarked on an innovative partnership under which UK operates and manages Eastern State Hospital.
UK HealthCare brings clinical, research and administrative expertise to the hospital and is in a unique position to draw on expertise from across multiple departments, including Psychiatry, Psychology, Social Work and Pharmacy, among others, to deliver recovery-focused care. UK also will leverage the new Eastern State Hospital to train the next generation of mental health professionals to care for people across the Commonwealth.
